Fortune Bay (NL, Canada) oceanographic observations May 2015 - May 2017

A comprehensive set of oceanographic data were collected in Fortune Bay, a broad, mid-latitude fjord located on the south coast of Newfoundland (Canada). The dataset was gathered in partnership with IFREMER who collected data around the adjacent French archipelago of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.

The dataset consists of data from taut-line moorings, land-based stations (a tide gauge and a couple of weather stations) and CTD profiles performed during mooring maintenances (~every 6 months). Parameters covered by the moorings include water column temperature (thermistor chain), salinity (2 points/depths per mooring), dissolved oxygen (on a limited number of moorings, within the surface layer) as well as current profiles (ADCP). Land-based stations monitored water level and temperature (tide gauge) and wind speed and direction, atmospheric pressure, air temperature and solar radiation (weather station). CTD profiles include dissolved oxygen for the most part. The program lasted two full years from May 2015 to May 2017 and sampling interval varied from 1-60 min depending on the instrument.

A variety of instruments was used: SBE19plusV2 and SBE25sealogger profilers, SBE19 and SBE37 CTDs (moored), T-RDI WorkHorse ADCPs (300, 600 and 1200 kHz), RBR XR420 temperature and oxygen loggers, RBR CTD concertos (moored), Onset HOBO TidBiTv2 (UTBI) thermistors, Onset HOBO U20 pressure and temperature sensors, IFREMER Mastodon thermistors (Lazure et al., 2015) Onset HOBO U30 weather station, SUTRON SatlinkV2 loggers (weather station and tide gauge).

 

In total, 179 timeseries and 8 CTD profiles surveys are available, uploaded in this order: 40 ADCP, 60 CTD/TD-DO (33 SBE19, 16 SBE37, 5 RBR concerto and 6 RBR XR420), 13 U20, 35 UTBI chain, 11 Mastodon, 16 weather station (6 U30, 6 SUTRON and 4 U20), 4 tide gauge (SUTRON) and 8 CTD surveys. Filenames listed below follow the convention: SITEID_YYYYMMDD_INSTRUMENT_SN for timeseries and YYYYMMDD_INSTRUMENT_SN for CTD surveys where YYYYMMDD is either deployment day (timeseries) or survey start date (surveys), INSTRUMENT is the instrument type used (e.g. WH300 for a T-RDI WorkHorse ADCP 300 kHz) and SN is the intrument serial number.

A metadata index is provided at the bottom containing information on the location (site ID, depth and coordinates), instrument (name and serial number) and timeseries (start, end, number of samples and sampling interval).
