Drifter deployment within the CALYPSO project in the Central Mediterranean Basin

The time series consist of trajectory data and sea surface temperature collected by a number of drifters released in six different deployments between 2012 and 2016. The drifters, which were procured through the CALYPSO project, were deployed in the channel between Malta and Sicily and the data collected was used to validate the sea surface currents measured by the HF radar network installed within the same project. CALYPSO was partly financed by the EU under the Operational Programme Italia-Malta 2007-2013.

Devices

The drifters used were MetOcean Surface Velocity Profilers (SVP), consisting of a float ball in plastic material or glass fiber (30-40 cm diameter) and a drogue with a diameter of 50-60 cm made of metal covered with perforated elastic material. The float consists of a series of batteries, a transmitter connected to an antenna that allowed the communication between the instrument and the satellite, and a surface temperature sensor. The real-time data, transmitted by each drifter and relayed through the Iridium satellite network, was received via email every hour.
