Note The dataset consists of: (1) a table summarizing the individual characteristics of captured seals (2) a metadata table for the above parameters (3) three datasets of all individual seal dives recorded by the Fastloc GPS/GSM tags developed at the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU, UK). Each dataset is provided for a separate species (harbour seals Pv or grey seals Hg) and one study site (Blasket islands, Kenamre bay and Wexford) (4) three metadata files describing the dive parameters for each study site and species (5) three datasets of all individual seal GPS locations recorded by SMRU’s Fastloc GPS/GSM tags. Each dataset is provided for a separate species and one study site (6) three metadata files describing the GPS location parameters or each study site and species (7) three datasets of all individual seal haulouts recorded by SMRU’s Fastloc GPS/GSM tags. Each dataset is provided for a separate species and one study site (8) three metadata files describing the haulout parameters or each study site and species

Abstract

Tracking data of 10 harbour seals and 16 grey seals were obtained from the deployment of Fastloc GPS/GSM tags developed by the Sea Mammal Research Unit (UK). Full tag description is available at: http://www.smru.st-andrews.ac.uk/Instrumentation/GPSPhoneTag/. The tags include a wet-dry sensor from which haulout events are recorded, a pressure sensor providing detailed dive data, as well as a Fastloc GPS recording irregular locations when the seal is not underwater. Data is stored onboard and transmitted via the GSM network when the seal is in the reception range. The data provided here are the individual GPS locations, dive parameters and haulouts of the seals fitted with these tags

Acknowledgements Tags were deployed under ethical approval from the University College Cork Animal Ethics Committee, and under licences issued by the Irish Health Products Regulatory Authority and National Parks & Wildlife Service. Funding for tags and their deployment in the Republic of Ireland came from Inland Fisheries Ireland, the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, the Higher Education Authority of Ireland, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, and the National Geographic Society. We thank all the fieldwork participants for their help in capturing seals, including colleagues from the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) and National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS).
Sensor metadata

GPS location data:

Data_type: Type of data provided (either GPS, Dive or Haulout)

Species: Seal species: Pv=Phoca vitulina (harbour seal), Hg = Halichoerus grypus (grey seal)

Capture_site: Location of the seal capture

Tag_number: Individual number of the seal fitted with a tag. One individual could be "numbered" differently on two consecutive field work if fitted with a new tag.

Seal_ID: Telemetry tag number

D_DATE: Date and time (UTC 0) of the recorded Fastloc GPS location

LAT: Latitude of the Fastloc GPS location (in decimal degrees)

LON: Longitude of the Fastloc GPS location (in decimal degrees)

V_MASK: SMRU filter of the locations. V_Mask=0 is plausible, V_Mask=20 is rejected due to unrealistic swimming speed, V_Mask=-1 could not be tested due to the lack of previous/next location

Dive data:

Data_type:Type of data provided (either GPS, Dive or Haulout)

Species:Seal species: Pv=Phoca vitulina (harbour seal), Hg = Halichoerus grypus (grey seal)

Capture_site:Location of the seal capture

Seal_ID:Individual number of the seal fitted with a tag. One individual could be "numbered" differently on two consecutive field work if fitted with a new tag.

Tag_number:Telemetry tag number

DE_DATE:Date and time of the Dive End

SURF_DUR:Post-dive surface duration (seconds)

DIVE_DUR:Dive duration (seconds)

PERCENT_AREA:Maximum depth (meters)

MAX_DEP:Percentage of the "maximum dive trapezoid" covered by the dive, used for the calculation of the Time Allocation at Depth index (TAD; cf. Fedak et al., 2001; https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1748-7692.2001.tb00982.x).

D1:Intermediate depth point 1 (metres) in the dive, at time = 10% of the total dive duration

D2:Intermediate depth point 2 (metres) in the dive, at time = 20% of the total dive duration

D3:Intermediate depth point 3 (metres) in the dive, at time = 30% of the total dive duration

D4:Intermediate depth point 4 (metres) in the dive, at time = 40% of the total dive duration

D5:Intermediate depth point 5 (metres) in the dive, at time = 50% of the total dive duration

D6:Intermediate depth point 6 (metres) in the dive, at time = 60% of the total dive duration

D7:Intermediate depth point 7 (metres) in the dive, at time = 70% of the total dive duration

D8:Intermediate depth point 8 (metres) in the dive, at time = 80% of the total dive duration

D9:Intermediate depth point 9 (metres) in the dive, at time = 90% of the total dive duration

LAT:Estimated latitude of the end of the dive (interpolated between previous and next "real" Fastloc GPS location recorded by the tag)

LON:Estimated longitude of the end of the dive (interpolated between previous and next "real" Fastloc GPS location recorded by the tag)

Haulout data:

Data_type:Type of data provided (either GPS, Dive or Haulout)

Species:Seal species: Pv=Phoca vitulina (harbour seal), Hg = Halichoerus grypus (grey seal)

Capture_site:Location of the seal capture

Tag_number:Individual number of the seal fitted with a tag. One individual could be "numbered" differently on two consecutive field work if fitted with a new tag.

Seal_ID:Telemetry tag number

D_DATE:Date and time (UTC 0) of the recorded Fastloc GPS location
