Autonomous temperature probes data from the EMSO-Azores observatory, 2022-2023
This dataset contains temperature data acquired between june 2022 and july 2023 with an array of 33 autonomous temperature probes installed in smoker orifices, cracks or patches of diffuse hydrothermal venting. We used 7 types of probes (HTW, HTWN, HTNKE, LTNKE, LTW, LTI and LTGrad). Probes locations, acquisition parameters and clock drift values (UTC-timeprobe) are listed in the metadata file.
Temperature data are provided for each deployed instrument as one or two text files, uncorrected for clock drift.

- Temperatures are recorded at frequencies between 1/30 s and 1/70 minutes.
High-temperature WHOI probes (HTW) contain of 2 J-type thermistors in their rod tip connected to 2 temperature data-loggers (named A & B), 2 data recordings are thus available for each probe. HTW probes record temperatures up to 415°C with an accuracy of ± 1.1°C, a resolution of 0.25°C at 375°C.
New high-temperature WHOI probes (HTWN) contain 1 temperature data-logger and 1 attitude logger to measure absolute orientation (tilt) and acceleration (not used in this survey). The thermocouple in their rod are J-Type. They record temperatures up to 450°C, with an accuracy of ± 0.6°C, a resolution of 0,03°C.
High-temperature NKE probes (HTNKE) record temperatures up to 450°C, with an accuracy of ±0.5°C, and a resolution of 0.1°C.
Low-temperature WHOI probes (LTW) record temperatures up to 125°C, with an accuracy of ±0.22°C, and a resolution of 0.025°C.
IPGP LT probe (LTI). This probe is a prototype with a titanium housing a xxx thermocouple and a OM-CP-RTDTEMP101A (Omega) logger. It record temperatures up to x°C, with an accuracy of ±x°C, and a resolution of x°C.
LTGrad probes comprise 2 LTiButton probes separated by 7 cm and attached to a 25 to 30 cm-long PVC support. Low-temperature iButton probes (LTiButton) record temperatures up to 85°C, with an accuracy of ±0.5°C, and a resolution of ±0.5°C (8 bits) or 0.0625°C (11 bits).
Test and calibration
All probes are synchronized to UTC time before deployment. Temperature readings of WHOI probes are checked with an oven at IPGP whenever the probe is not redeployed... which is not frequent because we do not have many spares. NKE probes are sent back to maker every 3-4 years for battery change and calibration. Clock drift at recovery is listed in the metadata file.
