Time-series of oceanographic data from two instrumented mooring lines deployed at the Burdwood Bank (08/2018-11/2019)

In 2013, Argentina declared its first open-sea Marine Protected Area (MPA) on the plateau of the Burdwood Bank, under the name Namuncurá/Burdwood Bank. Initially delimited by the 200-m isobath and including only the gently sloping plateau of the bank, the MPA was subsequently expanded to the southern steep slope in 2018 (Namuncurá/Burdwood Bank II), reaching a total protected area of 60336 km2.

Encouraged by the need to inform decision makers and administrators, several oceanographic surveys and diverse scientific studies were conducted on and around the bank. As part of these efforts, two mooring lines equipped with autonomous instruments (single-point current meters, ADCPs, sequential sediment traps, self-contained CTDs and other loggers) were deployed at two selected sites (54°8.52’S, 61°14.04’W; 54°29.94’ S, 58°31.1’ W) on Burdwood bank over an approximate water depth of 140 m. The initial deployment took place on august 2018; the moorings were afterwards visited, serviced and re-deployed twice (11/2018 and 04/2019) and finally recovered on 11/2019.

This dataset comprises the time series of current speed and direction, dissolved oxygen concentration, water temperature, salinity, and pressure collected on Burdwood Bank from August 2018 to November 2019.
